Boxing Stand: Reflex Bag Or Heavy Bag For Boxing?


Now when investing in a boxing bag to use with your boxing stand there are many things to consider. The most ideal situation for any boxer or fighter is to have as many boxing bags available as possible. Each different type of boxing bag is different in how it is used and what kind of benefits it can produce for the boxer, and if you want more information I have written several other articles, just visit my link below. For this article however I want to dive more into the heavy bag vs. reflex bag. They are very different, yet both are crucial to your boxing technique and training.


First lets look at the heavy bag. This will be your bag of choice if you want to focus on building up power. Your boxing technique can be great, but if you don't have enough power in a fight it will go on forever or until the other guy knocks you out. And let's just say you are boxing to get a great work out, well there is no better bag to work out on then the heavy bag. When you use a heavy bag, you are getting a complete and full upper body work out, that even includes your abs.


A reflex bag is more for perfecting your boxing techniques. Speed, hand eye coordination and timing are all skills you can work on when using a reflex bag. The reflex bag is a small round ball usually attached to a stand. When you hit the bag, instead of staying in the same place the bag will bob back and forth at you simulating punches being thrown by an opponent. You can also use this bag as a way to practice your defensive tactics. You will want to work on your foot work, bobbing and weaving and practice blocking punches.


Now you can use both bags with a boxing stand. When using a heavy bag, all you need to do is just clip it into the stand, that's it. Most people prefer this to hanging it themselves because they don't want to cause damage to their nice home and/or they want to drastically cut down on the noise for their family and neighbors. Using a reflex bag is a little different, you will probably use a double end bag. This serves the same purpose, however instead of the bag being on its own separate stand...you can attach a piece of bungee rope to both opposite sides and attach one rope to the top of the stand and one to the bottom. You will see Floyd Mayweather use the double end bag a lot in training.
